My last residency (at least for a while) was the September (2023) after my February stay at Vermont Studio Center. This residency was only one week and very much an outdoor beach experience. Cuttyhunk Island a small island off the coast of Massachusetts with no cars, no market and much nature.
My fellow residents were talented and lovely, though I did not get to know anyone very well. Unfortunately on the last day, I ended the trip a few hours early with a fierce case of Covid.
As with my past two residency experiences, I brought my usual kit: only a few hand tools, white glue, hemp twine, and toothpicks to use as fasteners.
My supplies were sea grasses which I wove into little pods and connected into a larger piece. I put the piece into the ocean and photographed and filmed
it swimming in the tide. While I did leave the piece to nature, by filming it in the ocean, it very much came to life and continues to live through the film.
My “Impermanence” experimenting is complete for now.
